How every wash goes here

Scrubbed by hand before the tunnel. Dried by hand after it.

Most washes are a machine and a blower. This corner has had a crew at both ends of the tunnel for 38 years, and that is the thing 512 Google reviews keep mentioning.

  1. 1

    Pre-scrub by hand

A crew member works the bugs, the road film, and the wheels before the car enters the tunnel. Most washes skip this step entirely.

  2. 2

    Soft-cloth tunnel

Cloth, not hard brushes, so clear coat stays clear.

  3. 3

    Hand dry at the exit

Towels at the end, not just a blower. Mirrors, door jambs, and the drip lines get wiped.

  4. 4

    A biscuit for the dog

Bring the dog. The crew keeps treats at the window.

Open when nothing else is

The bays never close.

Before the shift, after the coast, the night the dog found the beach. The self-serve bays at 1441 Broadway run 24 hours with vacuums right next to the stalls.

North Coast car care

What a Humboldt year does to a car

It is never one big mess here. It is a slow film of salt, sap, and road grit that dulls the paint if nobody deals with it. Here is the calendar.

November to March

Winter

Rain, road film, and salt fog

Storms lift oil and grit off Broadway and 101 and paint it up the doors. Fog off the bay leaves salt on anything parked outside.

What to do: Exterior wash every week or two, and let the wand or the tunnel hit the underside.

April and May

Spring

Pollen and sap

Alder and pine pollen turns a dark car yellow overnight. Sap from redwoods and pines bakes on if it sits through a sunny week.

What to do: Wash it off before it bakes. A hand pre-scrub gets sap a touchless wash leaves behind.

June to September

Summer

Dust, bugs, and beach sand

Gravel-road dust inland, bugs off 101 and 299, and sand from every beach between Centerville and Trinidad in the carpet.

What to do: This is Quick Clean Out season. The sand is in the seat tracks, not just the mats.

October

Fall

Needles and the first rains

Redwood needles pack into cowls and door jambs, and the first rain of the year floats a summer of oil off the road.

What to do: Clear the needles before the rain turns them to paste. Then wash after the first storm.
